Arlington-based Smith System is acquiring UK tech firm Brightmile to connect its safety programs with real-time driver performance data. The deal lets Smith System measure how fleet drivers apply their training on the road through mobile monitoring technology.
Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.
Smith System CEO Derek Dunaway called the deal a “natural evolution” of the company’s driver safety training. The technology will provide continuous monitoring to ensure drivers are applying what they learn, with digital tools that reinforce safe driving behaviors.
Brightmile’s mobile app analyzes driver behavior patterns in real time and provides personalized coaching when it detects unsafe practices. The platform includes a rewards program that encourages safer driving through gamification.
The deal extends Smith System beyond traditional training into digital driver risk management. Founded in 1952, the Arlington company has trained millions of employees in more than 100 countries and 15 languages.
‘More than the sum of its parts’
“Merging Brightmile’s platform with Smith’s decades-long experience delivering training across the world is a natural fit and an exciting opportunity to maximize the impact of our digital capabilities that the whole team has worked so hard to build,” Brightmile CEO Dominic Saunders said in a statement. “Bringing together the two company’s strengths truly is a case of the whole being more than the sum of its parts.”
