Listen Up: ShyBoy Hi‑Fi Bar Is Opening in Downtown Dallas

With roots in Tokyo’s post-WWII “jazz kissas,” Shyboy is inspired by other hi-fi listening bars around the world. The only venue in Dallas to feature custom-made loudspeaker systems by OJAS, Shyboy is centered on "deep listening," cutting-edge sound, and immersive design.

In a lot of Dallas bars and nightclubs, music is just part of the experience—a background for talking, drinking, flirting, and dancing. But at the all-new Shyboy hi-fi bar opening this week in downtown Dallas, music is the experience—thanks to a high-powered, high-dollar system of McIntosh amplifiers and customized Neve preamps.

Tagged as Dallas’ “first hi-fi bar,” Shyboy is being launched by Dallas-based Headington Companies with an inaugural weekend of programming from March 4-7. Located at 1313 Main Street in the subterranean level of The Drakestone, Shyboy is introducing Dallasites to a new nightlife concept centered on “deep listening,” cutting-edge sound, and immersive design.

With roots in Tokyo’s post-WWII “jazz kissas,” Shyboy is inspired by other hi-fi listening bars around the world. The venue will offer progressive, genre-bending programming, signature hi-balls and cocktails, and two state-of-the-art OJAS sound systems, designed by Devon Turnbull.

Shyboy is the brainchild of a team of nightlife veterans, sound professionals, and design and architecture experts. Its mission: to deliver an unparalleled sensory and auditory experience to all of its guests, from music lovers to partygoers to anyone who enjoys an energetic, yet refined, night out.

From the venue’s acoustically engineered architecture to its world-class sound system, every detail is designed to honor the integrity of music and “to blur the line between listener and participant.”

Former bank vaults convey ‘Brutalist’ sensibility

Shyboy’s interiors were designed by Dallas’ 5G Studio Collaborative, an award-winning architectural and interior design firm. Located in what were once bank vaults, the venue’s preserved, raw interior elements “imbue the space with a Brutalist sensibility,” Headington says.

The venue features two two distinctive spaces, each equipped with custom-made loudspeaker systems by OJAS—the renowned audio brand known for collaborations with Mark Ronson, Public Records, and Supreme, among others.

Shyboy is the only venue in Dallas to be furnished with OJAS equipment, Headington said.

Acoustician Ethan Bourdeau, who has worked on an array of premiere listening spaces around the world, helped acoustically tune the entire space at Shyboy, aiming for “the best listening quality possible”—with monolithic speakers juxtaposed with the curved ceiling lines of the underground space.

The Vault—a deliberately distinct chamber at Shyboy intended as an intimate listening lounge, is available for private events, sound classes, performances, and art exhibitions. The Vault’s entrance features an installation from artist Lachlan Turczan’s Optical Resonance series, which utilizes water and light to respond to the sound waves generated by the music in the space. The space also features a newly commissioned reflective sculpture by Florentine artist Duccio Maria Gambi.

Music celebrates ‘global DJ culture’

Shyboy’s music program celebrates global DJ culture and the immersive energy of nightlife, Headington said. Designed as both “a sonic sanctuary and a cultural crossroads,” the venue will offer music that spans Chicago house, Japanese city pop, soul, disco, classical, and rare international sounds.

Designed to honor “the art of vinyl, live mixing, and musical storytelling,” Shyboy will feature a lineup of DJs, producers, and live acts representing both rich local talent and global artists,

No cover throughout March

Throughout March, there will be no cover charge at Shyboy, with complimentary access offered to all guests. You can see the venue’s programming calendar for March by going here

Throughout the year, Shyboy will feature artists including Theo Parrish, Derrick Carter, Eli Escobar, Kai Alcé, and In Sheep’s Clothing—marking the venue as a destination “for both discerning listeners and devoted dancers.”
