Irving-Based Caterpillar Acquires Australian Mining Tech Solutions Co. RPMGlobal

This is the latest move in the mining sector for Caterpillar, the world's leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment. The company has been a leader in innovative autonomous mining solutions, including its Cat MineStar Command system for autonomous hauling, drilling, and more.

Irving-based Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT) has acquired RPMGlobal Holdings Limited, an Australian-based mining software company. Caterpillar said the acquisition expands its portfolio of data-driven mining technology and software solutions that help customers “plan, operate, and manage their sites more efficiently.”

Terms of the deal, first announced in October, were not disclosed. This is the latest move in the mining sector for Caterpillar, which is the world’s leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment, off-highway diesel and natural gas engines, industrial gas turbines and diesel-electric locomotives.

Caterpillar—which moved its global headquarters from Illinois to North Texas in 2022—said RPMGlobal will continue to offer products and services under the RPMGlobal brand.

“Acquiring RPMGlobal is a notable milestone supporting our strategy to solve the challenges our mining customers face every day,” said Denise Johnson, group president of Caterpillar Resource Industries.

“By combining RPMGlobal’s software capabilities with Caterpillar’s proven equipment and technology solutions, we’ll unlock new opportunities to help customers improve mine site performance, while advancing the future of mining technology in a way that is practical, scalable and grounded in their needs,” Johnson added in a statement.

Richard Mathews, CEO of RPMGlobal, said that given the complementary nature of the two companies’ technology offerings, “Caterpillar is an ideal home for both our people and our software products.”

“By deeply integrating our solution sets, we’ll be able to better solve the most difficult challenges mining companies grapple with daily,” he added. “The team and I are looking forward to working with the Caterpillar team for the benefit of our customers.”

Caterpillar offers autonomous mining solutions

Beyond its mining software solutions, Caterpillar has made an array of innovative moves in the mining sector. In 2023, it collaborated with Phoenix-based Freeport-McMoRan to convert the mining company’s fleet of 33 massive Cat 793 haul trucks at its Bagdad mine in Arizona to an autonomous haulage system using Cat MineStar Command for hauling.

In 2024, a collaboration among Caterpillar, Thiess, and WesTrac surpassed 1 million meters in autonomously drilling using three Cat drills at the Mt. Arthur South coal mine in New South Wales, Australia. The three drills used Cat MineStar technologies, and were managed by a single operator sitting in a remote operating station using Cat MineStar Command for drilling.
