After a long career in the jazz music business, Oak Cliff native Cameron Smith is taking a break to focus on his career in the visual arts.
With the transition, Smith has transformed his studio space in the Bishop Arts district into a gallery and he wants other artists to join him, according to the Oak Cliff Advocate.
“I was terrified, but completely liberated at the same time,” Smith said about making the switch on the gallery’s website.
“I didn’t show anything to anyone for more than a year and finally committed to get out on the skinny branches and let some people into my creative space and share my art. It’s the best decision I ever made.”
“Life in Black and White” will be the first show for Bishop Arts Modern and will feature a small collection of Smith’s works.
He plans to encourage other local artists to exhibit by renting out the space for a low cost and no commission fees. Other artists can use the studio to create, display, and share their work with the community, he told the Advocate.
“Life in Black and White” will open Saturday, with a reception from 5-8 p.m. The event will feature a live performance by jazz percussionist Jamal Mohamed.
The gallery is located at 518 Davis St.
