Michaels, the Irving-based arts and crafts retailer, is hosting an in-store MakerPlace event on June 15 at several locations in North Texas.
The pilot program lets customers discover local handmade artists and shop some of the goods available on Michaels’ online marketplace, which offers “truly handmade goods, classes, and how-to’s.” The initiative is a step forward from the retailer’s efforts to compete with platforms like Etsy, which we reported on earlier this spring.
On Saturday, June 15, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., three local artisans will showcase their creations at select Michaels stores (below), giving customers the opportunity to meet them in person and snag unique handmade goods.
Artists Spotlight
The featured artists are Danielle Hawiszczak of Moxie & Mischief, Abigail Lee of Bimble Art Studio, and Uruba of Handmade By Uruba. Each brings their own unique style and story to the table:
- Moxie & Mischief: Danielle Hawiszczak, a Michaels copywriter by day, puts a modern, feminist twist on vintage-inspired art. MakerPlace’s resources and exposure support her in creating unique pieces.
- Bimble Art Studio: Abigail Lee, with a fine arts background, creates joyful art that resonates with everyday life. MakerPlace has enabled her to build a thriving business and connect with her customers on a deeper level.
- Handmade By Uruba: Uruba rediscovered her love for macrame during the pandemic. Her sustainable, bohemian-inspired accessories and decor have gained a wider audience through MakerPlace, and the in-store pilot offers an opportunity for even greater community engagement.
