ExploreLearning, the company that offers interactive math and science simulations for grades 3-12, has acquired IS3D LLC for an undisclosed cost.

IS3D, an Athens, Georgia-based startup, developed Cogent Education Interactive Cases, which place students in the roles of science, technology, engineering, or mathematics professionals who are responsible for solving real-world problems.

Charlottesville, Virgina-based ExploreLearning is a business unit of Cambium Learning Group, which is headquartered in Dallas.

Cambium Learning Group is an educational services company providing online supplemental instructional and assessment materials. In addition to ExploreLearning, Cambium Learning’s business units include Learning A-Z (online teaching materials focused on reading, writing, and science), Voyager Sopris (which boosts literacy and math education), and Kurzweil Education (independent learning through mobile technology).

“Their Interactive Cases are a wonderful complement to Gizmos and will strengthen our ability to help STEM students develop the knowledge and skills to succeed.”

David Shuster

With its acquisition of IS3D, ExploreLearning plans to integrate the Congent Education resources and programs into its online simulation library, Gizmos, according to a release. The interactive cases will be available beginning in 2019. They provide help with difficult concepts by taking students through inquiry and problem-solving activities. As students work through one of Cogent Education’s real-world cases, teachers obtain real-time data to help them better personalize and differentiate instruction, as needed.

ExploreLearning also plans to keep IS3D co-founder and CEO Tom Robertson on board as well as the entire Cogent development team.

Robertson said the acquisition means the Gizmos library can bring Cogent Education products into more classrooms, while expanding the Interactive Cases concept into new topics.

“I am thrilled to welcome Tom and the talented Cogent team to ExploreLearning,” said David Shuster, founder and president of ExploreLearning, in a release. “Their Interactive Cases are a wonderful complement to Gizmos and will strengthen our ability to help STEM students develop the knowledge and skills to succeed.”
